Dear Judy,
Maybe this seems petty compared to some of the emails you get. But I go to the same gym every day at 8 AM — well every weekday anyway. And I always see almost all the same people every day, all of us getting pumped before we go off to work. And we always chat about light unimportant things.
I ask how they are, they ask about me, and the reply is always the same: “Fine, thanks.”
Except last month. I asked some woman how she was, and instead of the usual smiling reply, I get a whole litany of disaster! One of them, breast cancer. The next week, a weepy update. And the week after that, details of metastasis, and a horrible boss to boot. It’s getting so I’m scared to work out.
Judy, if this were a close, longtime friend. I’d be helpful, caring, and searching for stuff to do to help out. But I barely know this person!
What do I do?
Felicia
Dear Felicia,
Pick another time to work out.
Thank you for writing
Judy
