Dear Judy
I guess in a way I’m lucky, even though terminal (prostate cancer, pretty damn aggressive, and it’s expected to finish me off in a year or so…). I have my good days, or good half-days, and I’m able to plan my funeral, which I see in your recent blogs you highly recommend. I’ve chosen the coffin, the service, and now it’s time to figure out who will speak and say what a great guy I always was and how I never once lost my temper.
Here’s the real problem. I always hated my boss (he’s a bully and a coward). For years I kept this sentiment pretty well hidden. I had kids in college, I had a mortgage and a wife whose job doesn’t pay all that well. Now I feel maybe it’s time to drop the hypocrisy. I don’t want the guy to speak at my funeral. In fact I’d prefer if he stayed away entirely.
My wife says since I always pretended to like him, it would be really wrong not to give him a speaking part. Who’s right?

Dear Ari,
You’re right. If you don’t want the boss to speak, you’re the boss. What’s he going to do — fire you?
Thank you for writing
Judy
