Dear Judy,
I just learned I have multiple myeloma, and I know it’s fatal. I am about to write a Last Will. I have no children, no living parent, but I do have a sister.
She isn’t in good shape financially (the market shenanigans took her by surprise) and I am. We don’t get along. She feels the world owes her, and I feel the world has alredy done quite enough for her. She was very pretty and she had a nice husband, but she ran around on him. Now they’re divorced.
Do I have to leave her the bulk of my estate? I mean morally, not legally.
Annette
Dear Annette,
I’m not good on the issue of what’s “morally” correct in this instance. But I gather you’re not all that fond of your sister, and never were.
So the answer, for whatever reason, is: No, you don’t have to leave your sister a dime, if the thought of it turns your stomach. Right now your first object is to keep yourself comfortable and as healthy and sanguineĀ as possible under the circumstances.
Write your Will in whatever way makes you satisfied.
Thank you for writing
Judy
