Dear Judy,
What can I do about my mother? She has emphysema. We live in a large city where it’s illegal to smoke in office buildings or hotels. Every time I take her out (which is a big deal, as you can imagine…) and she sees someone taking a drag in front of a building, she stops cold and after a lot of wheezing, gives this perfect stranger a long lecture on the dangers of smoking.
Judy, everyone KNOWS the dangers of smoking already. Especially smokers. They don’t want or appreciate unsolicited advice from my mother. Her behavior is embarrassing. I’ve talked to her about this a million times.
Is there some way I can get her to stop?
Elaine
Dear Elaine,
Apparently not.
Thank you for writing
Judy

Apparently Elaine’s mother feels that this gives her life — and her illness — some meaning. and maybe hearing it directly from a victim will make a difference.
trying to educate a dying elderly woman is a million times more embarrassing than anything she does
