Dear Judy,
My father’s best friend is dying of bladder cancer. He was always rude. I remember when I came home from school (at 14!!), he told my father, in front of me, that I would never be beautiful or even good-looking so I “better learn a skill in order to earn a good living.”
Well I’m 30 now, and I do have a good job, thank you very much, and a nice live-in lover, and all things considered, I’m pretty happy.
My father wants me to visit his friend now that’s he’s so sick and under hospice care. He says the very least I can do is hold his hand and extend some sympathy and affection to his oldest friend.
Do I have to?
Lesley
Dear Lesley,
Absolutely not.
Thanks for writing
Judy
